Our Week, Day by Day

  1. Fly to the sunDay 1

    Fly to the sun

Overnight flight to Madrid, quick hop south to Tenerife, and by afternoon we're on a beach off the coast of Africa while Minneapolis shovels snow. Tapas and Rioja to celebrate.

Moment of the day: Landing in 70° sunshine in January

  2. Costa Adeje beach dayDay 2

    Costa Adeje beach day

Full recovery day on the golden sand of Playa del Duque — beach beds, long seafood lunch, an evening paseo along the promenade with gelato.

Moment of the day: That first warm ocean swim in winter

  3. Above the clouds on Mt. TeideDay 3

Above the clouds on Mt. Teide

Drive up through the clouds into the lunar caldera of Teide National Park, ride the cable car toward Spain's highest summit, and stay after dark for guided stargazing in one of Earth's clearest skies.

Moment of the day: Standing above the clouds, then under the Milky Way

  4. Whales in the straitDay 4

    Whales in the strait

Morning cruise from the marina — Tenerife has resident pilot whales year-round, plus bottlenose dolphins — then an afternoon swim and siesta.

Moment of the day: A whale surfacing feet from the boat

  5. The green north: Anaga & La LagunaDay 5

The green north: Anaga & La Laguna

Road trip into the ancient laurel cloud-forest of Anaga, lunch in a mountain village, and the afternoon in La Laguna's UNESCO-listed old town of pastel mansions.

Moment of the day: Driving a road that winds through the clouds

  6. Garachico & the farewell dinnerDay 6

    Garachico & the farewell dinner

North-coast day: swim in Garachico's volcanic rock pools, wander its cobbled plazas, then back south for an anniversary dinner watching the sun drop behind the Los Gigantes cliffs.

Moment of the day: A swim in a lava rock pool

  7. Hasta luego, TenerifeDay 7

    Hasta luego, Tenerife

Last beach morning and a slow café con leche, then the hop to Madrid and the flight home — tanned, in February, which feels illegal.

Moment of the day: Coming home with a winter suntan
